Giving to City College | Why We Give

Julia and Richard Rush
Dr. Richard H. Rush is the closest living relative of CCNY Founder, Townsend Harris

undefined
We are pleased to leave funds to City College in memory of Richard's greatgranduncle Townsend Harris, founder of the College — America's first free college — and the first American envoy to Japan, who negotiated the treaty which opened Japan to trade with the West. We've established an annuity to benefit CCNY, and the College is also one of the beneficiaries of a charitable remainder trust set up by Richard, as well as a third bequest that is part of our mplanned giving. In addition, CCNY has received valuable paintings from our collection. As the closest living relative of
Townsend Harris, Richard feels an affinity to City. But that is not the only reason we support CCNY. When he finished high school, CCNY was the only free college in the United States. Richard's family kept close contact with the school over many years and we have visited it often and are proud of it and the fine education that it has given to so many who might otherwise have missed this opportunity to develop their intellect and talents and achieve their goals.
