CCNY TO HOST ‘EINSTEINS IN THE CITY 2’ INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE OCTOBER 30 – 31
NEW YORK, October 17, 2007 – The City College of New York (CCNY) will host “Einsteins in the City 2: Research and Society,” an international multidisciplinary student research conference, October 30 – 31 in The Great Hall of Shepard Hall on the CCNY campus.
“We are holding this conference to showcase the important role that research plays in education across disciplines and how it connects to everyday life,” said Dr. Maria Tamargo, Professor of Chemistry at CCNY and chair of the conference organizing committee. “We want students and the public to view research as a broad, vibrant activity that plays a vital role in our society.”
More than 130 students representing 22 institutions in five states, Puerto Rico and Austria will exhibit and compete for awards in the conference’s two juried poster sessions on Wednesday, October 31. They will present their research findings in six disciplines: science and mathematics; engineering and computer science; social science; education; architecture, and humanities and the arts.
The conference will also feature two plenary sessions with speeches by prominent figures from the science and art worlds, also on October 31. The guest speakers are Sebastian, the Mexican sculptor whose monumental geometric sculptures have been placed in such cities as New York, Osaka, Buenos Aires and Mexico City, and Dr. Sidney Nagel, Stein-Freiler Distinguished Service Professor with the Department of Physics and James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago. In addition, Dr. Matthew Goldstein, Chancellor of The City University of New York, will offer welcoming remarks.
Conference registration fees are $35 for students and $50 for faculty prior to October 19 and $50 for students and $75 for faculty afterwards.
