NEW YORK, March 13, 2006 – The CCNY Center for Worker Education (CWE) announced today that it will relocate its facilities in August from Tribeca to the Financial District in Lower Manhattan. The new location at 25 Broadway is directly across from the famous bronze “Charging Bull” sculpture at Bowling Green, the city's oldest park, and convenient to 15 subways lines as well as other mass transit lines.
The school’s new home will be on the 7th Floor of the historic Cunard Building, a New York Landmark whose other tenants include Telehouse, Managed Health, Inc., Healthfirst Inc. and Crunch Fitness. The 44,000 square feet of leased space will include 15 classrooms to accommodate its 750 bachelor’s degree students, a state-of-the-art auditorium with 150 seating capacity, workshop classrooms, smart seminar rooms, an improved full-size computer lab, a student lounge, public information display, and a student study area/library resource room.
The new location is close to 15 subway lines (A, C, E, J, M, Z, R, W, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9), the Fulton Street Transit Center, several local and express bus routes, the Staten Island Ferry and the PATH line to New Jersey. CWE’s current home at 99 Hudson Street is to be converted to residential condominiums.
A $640,000 grant from the New York City Council will help pay for technology upgrades and equipment to add hands-on experiences to CWE’s media/film courses, according to Daniel Lemons, Dean of the Center for Worker Education. “A number of City Council Members supported the funding request including Alan Gerson (CWE councilman in District 1), Gale Brewer, Robert Jackson, Margarita Lopez, Charles Barron, Bill Perkins, Joel Rivera, Anabel Palma, Joseph Addabbo, Bill DeBlasio, Christine Quinn, Eva Moskowitz, Phillip Reed, Miguel Martinez, Maria Baez, David Weprin, Leroy Comrie, Melinda Katz and Speaker Gifford Miller, Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott as well as union supporters including, Arthur Cheliotis of CWA 1180, Jennifer Cunningham of 1199/SEIU, Roger Toussaint of the TWU, Carroll Haynes of Teamsters Local 237, Eddie Rodriguez of DC 37 Local 1549 and Cecelia McCall of PSC-CUNY.”
