On a cool April day, the CCNY men’s team heated up and showed why they are considered by many one of the most improved outfits around. The CUNYAC Indoor Champions, led by impressive sophomores Mamadou Paye and Dean Brown finished 9th of 16 at the College of New Jersey Invitational. The meet featuring Division lll NCAA men’s team Champions Lincoln University and the NCAA women’s runner ups CCNY Beavers produced an astonishing twenty seven NCAA qualifying performances. The Beavers showed their mettle by running away with the 4 x 100 meter title and landed six top five places.
The highlight of the day for the Beavers were the victorious 4 x 100 team of Rinaldy Alvarez, Arthur Driscoll, Hadley Hoyte and Paye who posted a very solid early season clocking of 42.78 seconds. The time is an ECAC qualifier and is just seven tenths of a second off the NCAA standard. Paye had double duty on the day as he returned to post a solid 10.97 in the 100 meter dash to finish fifth in a very impressive field. Brown who was an indoor NCAA qualifier in the high jump scaled an ECAC qualifying 1.95 meters to finish third.
Other notable performances for the Beavers were team captain Alvarez finishing fourth out of 14 qualifiers in the long jump with 6.43 meters, and fourth in the triple jump. CUNYAC Indoor champion and All ECAC performer Rene Wilkinson finished fifth in the triple jump. “From a team perspective, it’s heartening to see them compete so well” says Head Coach Lyndon George “if they were not finishing at the top of the list they were establishing personal bests. This is what we as coaches strive for.”
The Beavers returned to action on April 21 at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa.
