CCNY Defeats Brooklyn 3-1; Advances to Semifinal Round
New York, N.Y - The third-seeded CCNY Beavers (12-12, 10-4 CUNYAC) defeated the sixth-seeded Brooklyn College Bridges (7-16, 4-10 CUNYAC) 3-1 (30-18, 30-27, 25-30, 30-21) in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament on Tuesday evening at The Nat Holman Gymnasium.

CCNY got off to a strong start in the first game tonight, winning by 12 points, 30-18. In game two Brooklyn got as close as two points for the lead but came up short losing 27-30. The third game was the most competitive of the match, where the Bridges fought hard to avoid dropping the match and came back to win the game 30-25. The fourth and final game saw both teams fighting to stay ahead but the Beavers ended the game 30-21.

For CCNY, junior Ratmir Gorelik (James Madison HS/Brooklyn, N.Y.) tabbed team-high 12 kills and added 11 digs. Senior Opposite hitter Ricardo Chincha (Port Chester HS/Lima, Peru) also added 7 kills and game-high 14 digs. Junior Setter Carlos Matute (Grover Cleveland HS/Ecuador) dished out 28 assists to contribute to the win.

Brooklyn’s Kwan Tong Ma (New Utretch HS/Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled game-high 20 kills. Ma also added 9 digs and one block solo. While teammate Ferdi Ozsoy (Park West HS/Sunnyside, N.Y.) totaled 35 assists for the match.  

The Beavers now advance to the semifinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament. They will face the second-seeded Baruch College on March 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hunter College Sportsplex.

CUNYAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week (1/28/2008)

Ward posted back-to-back strong outings in the 400-meter dash last week for the Beavers, at the Great Dane Classic (Jan. 25) and one day later at the Wesleyan Invitational (Jan. 26). In the former meet at Albany, Ward placed 23rd overall in the event, clocking in with a time of 50.93. Less than 24 hours later at Wesleyan, Ward’s time of 52.48 was good for fourth place at the predominantly Division III meet.
