Roi Green has given his expertise, commitment and dedication to the CCNY fencing program for the past quarter century.
Green’s meritorious service was recognized by the Alumni Varsity Association as he was presented with a plaque to honor his contributions at the ninth annual Stevens Invitational held at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey on February 20.
Green was certainly taken aback by the award presented to him on Alumni Day for coaching the fencing team for 25 years and counting, with a host of past and present pupils in attendance. But he channeled his emotions to concentrate on leading his charges in three weapons disciplines.
In the Epee, Kathia Walia, a junior from Orchard Park High School and Buffalo, New York finished in 9th place (6-8). Freshman Vanessa Joseph (5-9) and her sister, sophomore Femaria Joseph (4-10), both graduates of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, placed 11th and 12th respectively.
In the Sabre competition, Keshina Shah, a sophomore from Martin Van Buren High School in Queens had a 12th place finish (8-10), the highest of any Beaver in this discipline. Kathy Zhang, a sophomore from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan placed 16th (3-15), while Dorothy Carlton, a freshman from Brooklyn and Science Skills Center High School ended the competition 18th (3-15).
The Beavers also had three entries in the Foil. Andrea Gaye, a freshman from Bronx Science High School placed 12th (6-10); Queens resident and Hillcrest High School graduate, freshman Ayanna Holder finished in 13th place (5-11); and Allison Chatham, a freshman from Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn placed 17th (1-15).
