CCNY falls to York College

Traveling to York College in search of their third conference win of the season, the CCNY Beavers were unable to prevent their record from dropping to 2-5 in the CUNYAC and 4-12 overall in losing by 69-57 to the Cardinals.

The Beavers and Cardinals were deadlocked at 26-26 when the teams concluded the first half of play. Although York shot 60% from the field (12-20) to CCNY’s 30.4% (7-23), the Beavers evened the score by converting 8-10 from the foul line while York was 0-1.

The Cardinals, who upped their mark to 5-13 (2-5 in the CUNYAC), continued their torrid shooting in the second half. They made 16 of 24 field goals, including going 4-8 from three-point range, and hit on 66.7% of their shots. Kwesi Livrpool (22 points, 10 rebounds), Reyaad Mohamed (17 points) and Francis Ainoo (10 points) spearheaded York’s victory.

CCNY, which received commendable performances from James Boddie, Andrew Mungin and Darryl France, hit on 42.3% (11-26) in the second half in being outscored 43-31. For the game the Beavers only shot 36.7% and were unsuccessful in keeping the Cardinals off the glass as York ended the evening with a 33-20 advantage in rebounding.

The sophomore guard Boddie from the Bronx and Jane Adams High School led CCNY with 24 points and seven steals. Mungin, a 5’11” sophomore from Vanguard High School in Brooklyn, had 14 points. While the senior France, of South Ozone Park, Queens and a graduate of Van Buren High School, added 12 points.

CCNY (5-2 overall, 0-1 CUNYAC North) won its only game of the week, a 73-64 defeat of Mitchell College, in large part due to the play of this week’s Rookie of the Week, Ashley Straughn. The freshman center recorded game highs with 20 points and 15 rebounds. She added two assists, three steals and one blocked shot in 30 minutes of action. CCNY returns to action in two weeks, when Gallaudet University travels to the Nat Holman Gym on December 29.
