CCNY Student-Athletes Collect 800 Lbs. of Food in Holiday Food Drive
|
New York, NY - The City College of New York Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) recently sponsored a college-wide community service project. The committee organized their first-annual holiday food drive from November 12 through November 22. The project raised more than 800 pounds of food to benefit New York City’s City Harvest Food Rescue Program.
SAAC organized the canned food drive as a community service competition amongst the sixteen athletic teams within CCNY athletics. Each team collected cans and other non-perishable items to benefit the local food bank.
The committee kept a tally to determine which team had the most items. The Women’s Volleyball team took the honor for most items collected with a total of 231 items. Men’s Basketball finished second with 209 items donated followed by Women’s Fencing with 188 collected.
“The drive was a success.” Said SAAC President, Taisiya Zuyeva. “We all came together to contribute to a great cause. Our goal for next year is to increase campus-wide participation.”
The CCNY SAAC is comprised of two student-athletes from each athletic team. 2007-2008 SAAC Committee members are: Taisiya Zuyeva (President, Women’s Volleyball), Rafael Jerez (Vice President, Men’s Volleyball), Johanna Ortiz (Treasurer, Women’s Basketball), Jhanine Rivera (Secretary, Women’s Volleyball), Ramy Abdalla (Men’s Volleyball), Jhensen Ortiz (Men’s Basketball), Froilan Vazquez (Men’s Basketball), Eve Pattison (Women’s Basketball), Doreen Martin (Women’s Basketball), Medinah Chin (Women’s Tennis), Nalini Chandebal (Women’s Tennis), Kristina Phu (Women’s Soccer), Astrid Portillo (Women’s Soccer), Dean Brown (Men’s Track & Field), Valentine Lyashenko (Cross Country), Sharnalee Stewart (Women’s Track & Field), Femaria Joseph (Women’s Fencing), Jennifer Ortiz (Women’s Fencing), and Richard Gomez (Baseball).

About City Harvest
City Harvest, a non-profit organization founded in 1982, is the world's first and New York City's only food rescue program.
Millions of pounds of good, edible food are thrown away each year by New York City food businesses. At the same time, more than one million people are hungry, including nearly 350,000 children and more than 140,000 senior citizens. City Harvest is the link between those who have so much and those who have too little.
This year, City Harvest will rescue 20 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry - including restaurants, manufacturers, wholesalers, greenmarkets, hotels, corporate cafeterias, grocery stores and farms - and deliver it to more than 600 community food programs throughout the five boroughs using a fleet of 16 trucks and volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.

Men's Soccer Taiwo Alabi posted a pair of 1-0, 11-save shutouts for CCNY in CUNYAC play last week. Alabi's play as the last line of defense helped the Beavers, winners of three straight, to a pair of 1-0 victories in CUNYAC competition. He made 11 saves in earning his first clean sheet of the season against John Jay (Sept. 17), before matching those totals three days later against Staten Island

Did you know that CCNY won the NCAA and NIT Tournaments in the 1949-1950 season and is the only school to ever win both tournaments in the same season?
