Staten Island Holds Off CCNY, 1-0, For CUNYAC Women's Soccer Championship

CUNYAC Release-

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2007) - Junior midfielder Bryn Malloy netted the lone goal of the game less than 20 minutes in, while the Staten Island defense forced 13 offsides by CCNY Saturday afternoon at Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex, as the top-seeded Dolphins captured their fourth City University of New York Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory over the second-seeded Beavers.

Staten Island (11-8) got all the offense it would need on the day at the 19:22 mark, when Malloy, named the championship's most valuable player, notched her fifth goal of the season. She blasted a deflected shot from teammate Kaitlin Myhre inside the near post from 15 yards away, beating CCNY (4-9) keeper Angelika Slabiak (four saves) to put her team on top.

The Beavers refused to go away quietly, as Kristina Phu made several strong runs at the opposing goal. However, it was the Dolphins' defense, led by the play of Jennifer Nunziata and Kristin Kvetkoff, among others, that kept CCNY at bay for most of the afternoon with a successful offsides trap.

"CCNY played very hard, but our defensive line was just stellar today," said Staten Island head coach John Guagliardo. "Especially in the second half, CCNY controlled the play and they forced us to play on our heels. We give our defense tremendous credit; we kept them out of our goal and shut them down when they got close."

CCNY appeared to have tied the game in the 71st minute after a flurry in front off a corner kick by Nicole Montalto, but was whistled offsides by the far-side linesman.

Staten Island's season continues Sunday with a kick-off against Mount Saint Vincent in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference final. A victory in that contest could go a long way towards determining the Dolphins' further postseason fate.
