Mechelle Barnwell Named CUNYAC Indoor Athlete of the Year; Lyndon George Tabbed Coach of the Year
|
CCNY’s Mechelle Barnwell was selected as the 2007 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, York’s Alexandra Nkrumah was named Rookie of the Year and CCNY head coach Lyndon George was awarded the Coach of the Year Award.
Barnwell, a senior, helped lead the Beavers to the CUNYAC title on February 25th. The Brooklyn, New York native was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the championship after scoring a meet-high 30 points and establishing three meet records. The senior set a new mark in the 55 meters (6.98), 200 meters (24.48) and the long jump (5.65 meters). The Prospect Heights graduate went on to capture the national championship in the 55 meters (7.04) at the NCAA Championships, held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana.
“I have never seen Mechelle more motivated and she has prepared like a champion this year,” said George. “She’s really spoiled us with her consistency and excellence.”
George coached CCNY to national prominence earlier this month, as the Beavers were the national runner-up to Williams College at the 2007 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. CCNY, who also won the CUNYAC title, won three individual national championships, including a pair by senior Alecia Watson (Evander Childs/Bronx, NY) and one by Barnwell. Watson won the long jump with an effort of 5.85 meters and also claimed the triple jump with a mark of 12.17 meters (39'11.25"). Both were NCAA Division III season-best results. Barnwell won the 55 meter title with a time of 7.04. Barnwell's teammates, Watson and sophomore Jodyann Raymond (Roosevelt/Bronx, NY), also earned All-American status in the event. Watson finished 5th (7.21) and Raymond took eighth (7.28).
“It’s quite an honor and it is always gratifying when your efforts are acknowledged,” George claimed. “I must mention the sacrifices and time my coaches and athletes put into this. We are all in this together. They are a special bunch of human beings.”
