Barnwell and Watson Sizzle at the Widener Invitational
NCAA indoor champions Mechelle Barnwell and Alecia Watson turned up their intensity another notch as they posted the top two times in the nation among Divison lll athletes at 200 meters. Watson crossed the finish line in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 24.45 seconds. Barnwell who led for most of the race faded in the last twenty meters to finish in 24.59 seconds. Earlier in the day Barnwell who seem to be returning to top form at just the right turn won the 100 meter dash in an NCAA provisional qualifying 12.13 seconds.

The Beaver received notable performances from 2006 NCAA outdoor All American Sharnalee Stewart and freshman Sasahgaye Palmer. Stewart dipped under the sixty second barrier in the 400 meters for the first time this season to clock 59.83 seconds while Palmer ran a strong homestretch to clock 60.97 seconds. Stewart’s performance is an ECAC qualifier. “Sharnalee and Sashagaye’s performance is an important development for us as a team” says Head Coach Lyndon George “we are smiling from ear to ear. That was definitely one of the highlights of the day for us.”

Barnwell and Watson continued to sharpen up on the long jump runway. Watson won the competition with an ECAC qualifying leap of 5.47 meters with Barnwell also qualifying with a third place finish of 5.15 meters.

The Beavers continue their march to the championship portion of their schedule with a stop at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia Pa on April 26-28.
