New York, NY - The CCNY Women’s Track & Field Team finished third for the second consecutive year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Beavers accumulated a total of 43 points, just trailing Calvin College by 1.5 points. A total of 67 teams participated in the event held at the J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh,Wisconsin.
The Beavers captured two national titles and a couple of runner-up trophies. The 4x100 relay team defended their national title by posting an NCAA season-best time of 46.32. Senior Alecia Watson (Evander Childs/Bronx, NY), sophomore Jodyann Raymond (Roosevelt/Bronx, NY), senior Mechelle Barnwell (Prospect Heights/Brooklyn, NY), and sophomore Sharnalee Stewart (Roosevelt/Bronx, NY) earned a first place finish and set a new J.J. Keller Field record.
On Saturday, defending champion, Alecia Watson took the gold in the triple jump with an effort of 39’-10 ¾” (12.16m) and setting a new J.J. Keller Field record. Watson also earned a second place finish in the long jump where she leaped a distance of 19-0 feet.
Mechelle Barnwell earned the silver medal in the 100 meters with a time of 12.43 seconds. Raymond and Watson also placed in the 100 meter final finishing fifth (12.56) and ninth (12.79), respectively. In the 200 meter dash final Barnwell finished seventh with a time of 25.37 and Watson ran a time of 25.40 seconds placing eighth.
“The ladies made great efforts this past weekend and I am very proud of their accomplishments. Their commitment and dedication allows them to achieve great things,” said coach Kirk Roberts. “I am happy that CCNY continues to be seen among the nation's elite in Track and Field."
The Beavers brought home a total of 10 All-America Title selections.
