Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies
Colin Powell Scholars, 2007-2008

Thérèse Collins
Thérèse Collins was born in Antigua. She came to City College to prepare for a career as a doctor.  Within her first semester, however, she radically changed course to pursue a double major in Jewish Studies and International Studies. She has participated in study groups to both Poland and the Dominican Republic. Thérèse is already active in policy at a number of levels.  She is currently VP for International Affairs in the undergraduate student government. She has interned with the Anti-Defamation League and Jewish Committee Relations Council of New York. She is also the coordinator of Americans for Informed Democracy at CCNY.

Cory Ip
Cory Ip started her university education with a BA in Social Studies from Harvard University, intent on pursuing a career in public policy.  Believing that the global community's response to the various effects of climate change will define its future, and that policy will play a critical role in how successfully the world responds to these effects, she enrolled at CCNY in 2005 to complete second undergraduate degree, this time in environmental science and engineering.  She now hopes to combine her two interests and use her scientific knowledge to create more effective policy, especially in the areas of the environment and long-term sustainability.

Xavier Martinez
Xavier Martinez was born and raised in the Washington Heights section of New York City, where he attended George Washington High School.  While there, he became interested in politics after being awarded a scholarship to participate in the Presidential Classroom scholastic program. He began attending CCNY in the Fall of 2003. Xavier’s deep commitment to social justice and empathy for the underprivileged led him to declare political science as his major and to plan for a career as a public defender. Xavier is currently working on an honors thesis examining the question of human rights violations against gang members in Honduras. He is also actively involved in the Royal Rangers, a community program which aims to provide support and alternatives for youth in underserved communities.

Jessica Raatz
After three semesters studying Global Studies and Theater at the University of Minnesota and a year in Bahia, Brazil, Jessica transferred to CCNY. It was Jessica’s year in Bahia that sparked her interest in Latin American politics and in a career in international development.  In the summer of 2006 she expanded her experience in the field by spending a month teaching in a rural school in El Salvador. Jessica was also selected by Oxfam to be trained as a Change Leader.  In this capacity, she works on campus to promote Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair campaign and throughout New York to educate people about the links between trade policies and world poverty. She is currently a sophomore.

Lindsay White
Lindsay White initially moved to New York to be an actress. After three years of study and a variety of jobs, Lindsay decided to transfer her talent and her interest in helping young people into pursuing a degree in psychology.  She entered CCNY as a SEEK student in the Fall of 2005. Since then, Lindsay has spent a summer at Wediko, a non-profit residential community, working with children and adolescents with serious emotional and behavioral disabilities (SED).  She currently volunteers at the New York Psychiatric Institute. After graduate work, Lindsay intends to work on public education reform with a particular focus on  improving policy and services for young people who suffer trauma at home and need, in her words, “a safe haven and healthy learning environment to succeed.”
