Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies
Colin Powell Leadership Program

The Colin Powell Leadership Program provides a select group of exemplary students with the resources and experience necessary to develop that potential. It is an inter disciplinary program of instruction and co-curricular support tailored to a particular conception of leadership, citizenship and humanitarianism, a vision exemplified by Colin Powell himself, and woven into the City College of New York’s Colin Powell Center’s mission and vision. The program admits five students annually, for a two-year program of instruction, research and service.  For each of these two years, students receive $10,000 in scholarship, research, and internship support.

Students will be recruited to work in specific programs, thematically structured around one of the Center’s main initiative areas (at present: Engaging New York, Leadership and Philanthropy, Democracy Assistance, and Multilateral Diplomacy and International Organizations.) In many cases, student will be required to take one or two special courses, designed to provide practical and theoretical background in the student’s area of concentration. Students will undergo year end and midterm reviews, and continued participation in the program will be contingent on favorable reviews.  Participation inco-curricular activities associated with the program is mandatory.

Support to students program participants covers a number of areas:
  • Students receive academic year support, which helps them meet tuition expenses.
  • Over the summer, students receive support of up to $3,500 (depending on program Cost and the availability of other support) to participate in summer internships.
  • Support for student research and service activity.
