Center Hosts Marc Benioff

Corporate philanthropist and technology entrepreneur discusses "Encouraging Corporate Responsibility."

Marc Benioff, CEO and chairman of Salesforce.com, presented a discussion on the role of corporate giving at Shepard Hall on April 17. Mr. Benioff, widely known for his innovative approach to corporate philanthropy, focused on current efforts to harness business assets in light of the country's economic downturn. The talk, sponsored by the Powell Center, also included short presentations by a foundation associate who oversees day-to-day philanthropic efforts and the principal of a Bronx high school that is a recipient of a Salesforce.com grant and technology applications.
    After his opening presentation, Mr Benioff was joined on stage by four Powell Center scholars: Melissa Frakman, Cory Ip, Jessica Raatz, and Lindsay White. The scholars, who have been researching corporate philanthropy, asked Mr. Benioff a series of questions relating to his efforts, including whether corporations do enough for social causes and what effect a recession would have on philanthropic efforts. The question-and-answer session, a culmination of the students' research, was also an element of the Center's policy and leadership programming, designed to sharpen the leadership skills of Center scholars and fellows and to deepen their understanding of their research subject.
