2008-2009 Fellowships/Grants for Service Learning

The Colin Powell Center is requesting proposals from individual faculty and academic units and departments to build service-learning and other forms of engaged scholarship into a single course, into a major or into other parts of the curriculum. In general, these activities should:

  • Enhance teaching and learning by connecting theory and practice
  • Make disciplines visible and relevant to the public
  • Promote informed and active citizenship
  • Facilitate greater interest and engagement with course subject matter, and
  • Increase cooperation and communication between the College and the community

Available to Individual Faculty

  • Service-Learning Faculty Fellowships: Up to $2,750 available for individual faculty who are developing and teaching new service-learning courses or revising or sustaining current courses that include significant community-based learning  Service-Learning Faculty Fellowships

Available to Academic Departments/Programs

  • Engaged Department Planning Grants:  Up to $5,500 available to support a department or program in a semester of planning for ways to integrate service-learning and other forms of engaged scholarship into the unit's curriculum. Engaged Department Planning Grant
  • Engaged Department Implementation Grants: Up to $7,000in additional funding available to departments/unit that have previously received a planning grant. Engaged Department Implementation Grant
  • Service-Learning Student Advocate Stipends:  Up to $1,500 available to departments/units that have perviously received a planning AND implementation grant. Student Advocate Stipends

Available to Former Faculty Fellows

  • Service-Learning Course Assistants: $750 available to individual faculty to hire a student assistant for a service-learning course. Course Assistant Grants
  • Service-Learning Project Grants: Up to $1000 available to individual faculty for service-learning related course or project expenses. Service Project Grants
