Background and History 
Service learning is a teaching method that incorporates service projects into the curriculum to advance and enrich a course’s academic content.

The goals of the Service-Learning Program are consistent with the Center's mission and overall orientation.  By promoting this innovative pedaogy, The Center seeks to:

  • extend student learning beyond the classroom
  • provide students with opportunities to build real-world leadership skills and explore future career options in public service and policy-making.
  • create a culture of service, civic engagement and public scholarship at CCNY

Since 2005, the Colin Powell Center has taken the lead in advancing service-learning at CCNY.  Service learning courses have been offered across a range of academic disciplines from architecture to psychology.  Read more.

  • The Colin Powell Center and New York Campus Compact  co-sponsored a service-learning roundtable at City College, Community Partners as True Partners. Read More
  • The Colin Powell Center has received a 32-month $163,000 grant to forge a new alliance dedicated to advancing service learning across the New York Metro region. Read More
  • The Colin Powell Center's Service-Learning Program Director, Nora Heaphy, co-faciliated a New York Campus Compact-sponsored Regional Roundtable at Mount Saint Mary's College on January 17th. Titled Reflection: The Essence of Service-Learning, the event focused on the value of encouraging student reflection of service activities and drew close to 50 participants.
