Founded in 1992 at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York is the first and only university-based research institute in the United States devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent.

This is a 2-disk four-part TV series hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. on the African legacy in the Dominican Republic among others. The series looks at issues of race and culture in Latin American and Caribbean countries where historically African influenced music and beliefs systems co-exist alongside European cultural motifs.
