Founded in 1992 at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York is the first and only university-based research institute in the United States devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent.

This is a documentary on the origins of Dominican folk dance music and merengue. There are some interviews with Dominican folk musicians. This documentary is based on the book: Antes de que te vayas written by Rafael Chaljub Mejía (Santo Domingo: Grupo León Jimenes, 2002).
