Founded in 1992 at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York is the first and only university-based research institute in the United States devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent.

An Evening with Don Pedro Mir is a celebration of the publication Countersong to Walt Whitman and other Poems by Pedro Mir, which is the first substantial collection of texts by a Dominican poet to have been made available in English. Featuring Manuel de la Nuez, George Irish, Jean Franco, Richard Schaaf, Jonathan Cohen, and the poet himself, the activity was moderated by Silvio Torres-Saillant.
