Heart-2-Heart:
Improving Health Health in Harlem and Winning the Million Hearts Campaign

Every hour, more than 100 Americans suffer heart attacks or strokes—and rates are even higher in Harlem and Northern Manhattan. Now the Colin Powell Center and key partners are helping to launch a national campaign in Harlem to cut this number by 1 million deaths over five years.

On Wednesday May 2, the Center hosted the 2012 New York Life Symposium, "Heart-2-Heart: Improving Heart Health and Winning the Million Hearts Campaign." Sponsored by the New York Life Endowment for Emerging African-American Issues, and presented in collaboration with The Harlem Health Promotion Center, the conference drew distinguished health professionals, community leaders, and interested residents for an in-depth examination of how Harlem can serve as a model for bringing down local rates of heart attacks, strokes, and heart disease.

The focus of the day included:

• Improving access to effective care through innovative programs and approaches

• Improving quality of care for ABCS (Asprin for people at risk, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking cessation)

• Leveraging social media and new technology to deliver effective health messages.

• Focusing clinical attention on the prevention of heart attack and stroke

• Activating the public to lead a heart health lifestyle
