Nisha Tabassum
Dobrich New Americans Scholar, 2012-2014
Nisha Tabassum, a native of Bangladesh, is a second-year international studies major in the City College Honors program. Her goal is to address youth development in developing nations, an interest shaped by three years of volunteering with the All Stars Project, Inc., a nonprofit youth organization that provides quality after-school programs for inner city youth. Nisha understands the difference exposure to enriching, developmental experiences makes for young people, and how it shows them what the cosmopolitan world has to offer as a means of reaching their goals and developing leadership skills. Nisha says she, herself, has grown tremendously by participating in an All Stars Project program. Her goal is to bring this kind of development to impoverished youth in developing nations by implementing programs that not only expose young people to various career trajectories, but also help them to realize their own leadership potential. She strongly believes that one’s circumstances, no matter how challenging, should not define who that person is. A person’s potential and capabilities are infinite if only she has the ability to believe that she can do more and make a difference in the world.
