Colin Powell Fellow, 2010-2012

Mariama BahBorn in a remote village in the West African country of Guinea Conakry, Mariama Bah is an international studies major at CCNY. As a child she attended a private Arabic-French school with an ethnically diverse student population and then moved to Senegal. Through this experience, Mariama discovered a facility for languages and an appreciation for diverse cultures. At CCNY, she has participated in the Model UN program and volunteered with the campus organization Women in Islam. She also has served as an intern with an immigration-focused law firm, volunteered in an elementary school classroom, and helped to organize fundraisers for the nonprofit organization Build On, which builds schools in developing countries such as Mali, Nicaragua, and Nepal. She hopes to establish a chapter of the organization at CCNY. Mariama’s goal is to pursue graduate studies in languages and international studies, and she hopes eventually to serve with an international organization such as the UN.
