Speaker Addresses challenges of successful careers
Reverend Alfonso Wyatt spoke about careers in public service to a group of graduate students at a lecture on September 22nd at City College.  About 25 students heard Reverend Wyatt, Vice President of the Fund for the City of New York, offer advice on factors influencing career success.  The Reverend has decades of service to the City of New York, most of that involved with improving opportunity for the City's youth.  The students in attendance are enrolled in City College's Public Service Management Program, which prepares students for management careers in government agencies and non-profit organizations.

School Chancellor Addresses Symposium
On Tuesday, May 3rd, the New York City Mayor's Office and the Charles B. Rangel Center held a symposium on the problem of youth violence. The event offered more than 50  grassroots leaders in violence prevention the chance to network, build skills, and discuss unique and innovative ways to share resources.  Noted community leader Reverend Alfonso Wyatt gave the keynote address. New York City Chancellor Walcott gave the closing remarks.

Rangel Fellow Named Truman Scholar
Ayodel jpgRangel Scholar Ayodele Oti has been named a 2011 Harry S. Truman Scholar.  "I am excited to be one of the representatives from City College, and I look forward to all the opportunities being a Truman Scholar will afford me," said Ms. Oti.  Ayodele, who is majoring in international environmental public health and ecology, has a GPA of 3.94.  She spent the summer of 2009 working for Earth Day Network in Washington, DC as part of the Rangel Center's Rosenberg Humphrey Program.  For the past two years, she has contributed hundreds of hours of service to our community as part of the Rangel Fellows Program.

JoeandJuan22Joseph Alston (pictured near right) has been appointed Assistant Director of the Harlem Children's Zone. Joseph was the very first student to graduate from the Public Service Management Program. He was a recipient of a Rangel Center scholarship and completed a Center-supported internship working at refugee camps in South Africa.   Juan Rosa (pictured right) was recently appointed to the staff of the Manhattan Borough President's Office. He was also recently chosen as one of "40 Under 40 Rising Latino Stars," by the Hispanic Coalition of New York.  Juan was a recipient of a Rangel Center Scholarship and completed a Center-supported internship working for the office of Senator Gillibrand in Washington DC.

Rangel Summer Interns Selected
rh2The Rangel Center recently announced its Rosenberg/Humphrey policy interns for summer 2011. Twelve undergraduates were selected from over 45 who applied for the program (interns Sonya Santamaria and Yah-Hanna Jenkins are pictured right). Students receive stipends for ten weeks of policy work with government agencies and non-profit organizations located in New York City and Washington, DC. Read more

Speaker Outlines Challenges Facing Urban America
WilhelIn a November 20th lecture for graduate students, Wilhelmina Leigh of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies discussed the economic downturn and its implications for urban America. The Joint Center is one of the nation's premier research and public policy institutions and the only one that focuses exclusively on issues of particular concern to African Americans and other people of color.

City Council Simulation
The Rangel Center has agreed to partner with the Harlem Mission Society to conduct simulations of City Council hearings. The event will  involve more than 20 students from area high schools and is part of the Center's efforts to encourage interest in public service careers and to promote City College's graduate program. read more


Research Assistants and Grants Announced
The Rangel Center has awarded five faculty members grants to support research on diversity in public service. In addition, eight public service graduate students are recipients of scholarships supporting their research partnerships with faculty. Read more

City Council Member Jackson Addresses Students
jackson1On September 23, about 50 attended a presentation by City Councilman Robert Jackson. The event was part of the Rangel Center's speakers series. Councilman Jackson spoke about his career in public service and his path to the City Council. He urged students to take full advantage of internships and other opportunities available through the college and stressed the importance of networking. The Councilman represents parts of Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights, and Harlem. He serves as Chair of the Council's Education Committee.

Student Efforts Acknowledged
HawaiAt a September 16th event, the Rangel Center acknowledged the work of students who participate in several community service programs it supports. The programs offer students tuition assistance in return for community service. Undergraduates in the program have contributed thousands of hours of help to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Jamaica Hospital, and the American Cancer Society. “Our program provides students with invaluable real-world experience, as well as an opportunity to help their community,” said Hawai Kwok, the program’s director (pictured right), “I am so proud to be part of this effort.”


Career Networking Event Held In Washington
IMG_0136The Rangel Center hosted its second annual career networking event in Washington, DC on July 8th. The event brought together students and professionals from more than 20 organizations for some high-powered networking and career counseling. Organizations represented included the Government Accountability Office, the US Senate, the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, and the Technology Policy Institute. Rangel Students Graduate
IMG_0051At its May 28th commencement, the City College of New York graduated its first students from the Rangel Center supported Public Service Management Program. (Graduates Commoy McDonald and Dikel Fall are pictured right.) The commencement ceremony capped two weeks of celebration. On May 17th Congressman Charles B. Rangel hosted a breakfast for graduating students at his office on 125th Street. “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate these CCNY Public Service Fellows,” said Congressman Rangel. On May 21st, Dean Marilyn Hoskin hosted a dinner honoring graduates. At the event, students Joseph Alston, Ann Bascom, Jennifer Czirr, Cruzmarina Esquilin and Dawn Mikkelson received awards for their performance in the program. Students graduated from the two-year program with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Read more about the MPA degree

White House Internship
AnsariRangel scholar Nausheen Ansari (pictured right) was appointed to a White House Internship, a first for the Center. Nausheen is a member of the second class admitted to the Public Service Management Program at CCNY. She has a long history of public and community service, including internships with Amnesty International and the ACLU. She will spend the summer in the White House communication’s office.
