There are many great ways to get involved with the Urban Scholars program! Volunteer and work positions are available both in the academic year and summer. Position descriptions and application instructions are listed below.

Staff Positions and Title

Academic Tutor
Multiple positions, 2-15 hours a week

Position Description
Tutors are selected for Urban Scholars based on their prior tutoring experience and their commitment and ability to motivate students. Tutors are matched with five students based on their tutoring ability in a combination of subjects in which the student needs assistance. Tutor positions are primarily paid with work-study or volunteer positions. Responsibilities include:
  • Tutoring for 2 hours on a weekday afternoon, at school site
  • Encouraging and motivating tutees to strive for academic excellence
  • Actively participating in quarterly tutor training sessions
  • Documenting tutoring content and hours after each session
  • Communicating regularly with Tutor Coordinators
Application Process
Urban Scholars requires a full academic-year commitment from all tutors. You must be available to tutor on two (2) weekday afternoon per week. If you are not able to make the full commitment but would be willing to act as a substitute tutor, please indicate so on the application.

 
Tutor Program Coordinator
1 position, 15 hours per week

Position Description
The Tutor Program Coordinator coordinates all aspects of the academic year tutoring program. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with supervision of the Tutors
  • Overseeing tutor recruitment, selection, and training
  • Overseeing tutor motivation and appreciation
  • Coordinating tutoring program (i.e., schedule, documentation and records management)
  • Tutoring program participants
  • Serving as liaison to School from which participants are drawn
  • Working closely with Office professional staff
 
Tutor Coordinator
3 positions, 10 hours per week

Position Description
Tutor Coordinators work closely with tutors and students to coordinate tutoring at their target schools sites. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with tutor recruitment, selection, training, and appreciation activities
  • Leading a team of 3-10 tutors in providing individual academic assistance to students
  • Monitoring academic progress and school/class attendance of program participants
  • Providing tutors with student academic progress reports
  • Motivating students to pursue higher education
  • Maintaining program records
  • Analyzing student grade reports to determine academic strengths and areas in need of improvement
  • Facilitating monthly workshops for program participants
  • Meet monthly with Academic Coordinator to review Process Objectives.

Senior Advisor
3 position, 5-7 hours per week

Position Description
The Senior Advisor works closely with the Academic Coordinator and Assistant Director in providing intensive advising and support to Urban Scholars high school seniors. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting Assistantship in advising of high school seniors (i.e. fall retreat, weekly senior meeting, ongoing support and of senior project/presentation)
  • Monitoring academic progress and school attendance of participants
  • Facilitating monthly workshops for seniors
  • Maintaining weekly communication with seniors, through phone calls and email
  • Collecting and disseminating scholarship information to all program participants
 
Administrative Assistant
Multiple position, 10-15 hours per week

Position Description
The Administrative Assistant works with all program staff to maintain smooth functioning of US programs and operations. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting Activity Coordinator with planning of special events
  • Typing, layout, spreadsheet work
  • General communications (phone calls, letter writing, emailing)
  • Writing and editing
  • Sorting, organizing, maintaining order
  • Archiving program files
  • Photocopying and filing
  • Running errands

Education and Youth Development Counselor

Counselor Description
The Urban Scholars summer residential program serves 60 students, and consists of two week on the City College campus plus a 3-4 week residential experience on then campus of SUNY Maritime College. Participants at SUNY Maritime live on-campus Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons, and return home during the weekends.   Summer fellows work with students who are engaged in academic courses, study hall, educational workshops and electives, community service, recreation, and cultural/educational field trips. Fellows will be responsible for planning and implementing most aspects of the summer program, including designing and teaching the community service and elective workshops, supervising and tutoring during study hall, attending and monitoring all field trips, implementing recreational activities, and providing mentoring and informal advising to the students. Additionally, because Urban Scholars is a residential camp for young people, counselors, fellows are expected to be on-call 24 hours a day while students are on campus.

Residential Supervisor

Position Description
An important component of Urban Scholars is the five-week Summer Program, where students commute to City College and live on the SUNY Maritime College campus participating in college-preparatory courses and other enrichment activities. The Residential Supervisor plays an intricate role in fostering the values of the Urban Scholars program through the residential environment. She/he serves as a member of the Professional Staff team and co-supervises the four-six Youth & Education counselors. Responsibilities include:
  • Co-supervise and train fellows, particularly in the areas of community building and emergency procedures;
  • Utilize student development models to direct staff in their programming efforts and assist students with disciplinary issues;
  • Promote diversity and community building activities;
  • Oversee area office during business hours;
  • Develop and implement programs/workshops for high school participants;
  • Maintain ongoing communication with students, staff, supervisor, and appropriate campus officials regarding activities and incidents that occur within the residence hall;
  • Provide encouragement and motivation for students regarding their academic priorities;
  • Assume evening on-call responsibilities for residential facilities (60 students); and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Selection Criteria
  • Bachelors degree;
  • Excellent communication and team building skills;
  • Sensitivity to multicultural issues and supportive of the creation of a diverse environment;
  • Strong planning and organizational abilities;
  • Prior experience with residential programs;
  • Prior experience working with youth;
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Time Commitment & Compensation
The 2008 Summer Program officially begins on Monday, June 28 and ends on Friday, August 2. All summer staff are required to attend staff training, from Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 21. The Residential Supervisor is on-call 24 hours a day, from Sunday evenings to Friday afternoons. (Participants may leave campus on Friday afternoons and return on Sunday evenings).   The Residential Supervisor will receive a stipend of $2,000.00 and housing will be provided from Sunday, June 28 through Saturday, August 2, 2008. Room and Board is included when participants are present.

Summer Instructors

Position Description
Summer instructors are responsible for developing and teaching a high school level introductory course or courses in Science, Math, Foreign Language, English, Social Sciences, SAT Preparation, or Study Skills. Instructors are also responsible for:
  • Developing innovative and interactive instructional programs to engage students
  • Assessing the unique learning styles of students
  • Utilizing a Undergraduate Teacher's Assistant
  • Providing academic advising to students, as needed
  • Maintaining attendance, grade, and evaluation records on assigned students
  • Preparing weekly lesson plans and homework schedules
  • Preparing weekly and cumulative narrative and letter grade evaluations
  • Serving as a role model/mentor for program participants
  • Participating in all staff trainings and meetings
  • Participating in parent and student summer program orientations
  • Selection Criteria
  • Prior experience working in a teaching capacity in a secondary or postsecondary institution or setting (New York State-eligible teaching credential preferred)
  • Familiarity with and sensitivity to the unique learning issues associated with low-income and/ or potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with program participants
  • Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to initiate, organize and set priorities for multiple assignments while working independently and as part of a team
  • Individuals with educational and/or economic background similar to the participants strongly encouraged to apply

Summer Tutors

Position Description
Summer tutors assist students with homework and study skills during evening study hall hours. More details will be posted in April. This is a volunteer or work-study position.

Selection Criteria
  • Enthusiastic and energetic
  • Interest in or prior experience with tutoring or mentoring youth
  • Some experience with students from diverse background
