CUNY Assessment Tests (CAT)

The CUNY Assessment Tests are critical in measuring your readiness for college success. These high-stakes tests evaluate your competency in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Your results on the CUNY Assessment Tests can determine your admission to The City College of New York (CCNY).
  • Your results on the CUNY Assessment Tests can determine whether or not you can enroll in credit-bearing courses directly, or if you must first take non-credit courses in reading, writing, math, or ESL.

Math 3 Placement Test 

The Math 3 placement test is administered to students who have demonstrated proficiency in math by taking the CUNY Assessment Test in Pre-Algebra (Math 1) and Algebra (Math 2) or have met the university's math exemption criteria.

Ability-to-Benefit (ATB) Test

The Ability-to-Benefit (ATB) testing requirement is for students who are seeking financial aid awards under the state's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for the first time and do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) from a United State high school. The test is given in three different areas: Reading, Math 1 (Numerical skills/Pre-Algebra), and Writing Objective.
