 Ivana Lazaroska
Ivana Lazaroska
History and Political Science Major
City College Fellow

Ivana was born and raised in Macedonia, but has been a New Yorker for the past ten years. Various political thinkers and revisionist historians have shaped her educational path and academic aspiration during her time at CUNY. As a double major in History and Political Science, Ivana’s research focuses on the critical points and historical junctures during which one form of Islamic political thought has taken precedence over another in the Middle East and the Balkans over the course of the 20th century. She is also interested in exploring the emergence of Christian religious fundamentalism, and the similarities and differences with political Islam, particularly in the Balkans.

Ivana’s objective is to earn a PhD and produce scholarship on how—and more importantly, why—religion has become a primary force of nationalist identity rather than a form of spiritual identification after the fall of communist regimes in countries like Syria, Albania, and Bosnia.
