History & Political Science Major
City College Fellow
Rocio Rayo is a History and Political Science major who is especially interested in the historical relationship between the United States and Central America as well as Latin America as a whole. Rocio graduated from a New York City high school in 2000. Instead of going directly to college, she got a job as a runner for a criminal defense attorney and worked her way up to becoming a paralegal. However, she realized she needed a college degree to rise above a support staff role and enrolled in Hostos Community College in fall 2009. At Hostos, she became aware of the special role that community colleges play in making higher education accessible to people from poor, working class, and minority communities. She continues to work as a writing tutor at Hostos since transferring to CCNY in fall 2011. Rocio has a 5 year old son, Amir, and is constantly trying to find better ways to balance her educational, political, work, and family commitments. She is an organizer with a coalition of CUNY students from different CUNY campuses called "Students United For A Free CUNY." Her goal, after graduating from City, is to pursue a doctoral degree in history and to build a career as a professor, researcher, and writer.
