How do I declare a major or minor?Students wishing to pursue a major plan in the Humanities and the Arts must meet with an advisor in the chosen department and fill out a major declaration form to be filed with the Office of the Registrar. Academic advising will then be divided between the Undergraduate advisors in the Office of the Dean of Humanities and the Arts and a faculty advisor in the chosen department. Students pursuing additional programs such as minors or dual majors will also receive faculty advising in each respective program.
How do I register for classes?All registration is done by the student using CUNYfirst.
Do I need an appointment to register?Yes. You can check your CUNYfirst account. This will indicate the day and time to register for courses.
Can I take a semester off from school and return?Yes. If your GPA is above 2.0 you can fill out a re-admission form. Please bring the completed form to our office to get your advisor's signature and then submit it to the office of Admissions in A-101.
What if my GPA is below 2.0?If you are on academic probation, you are not automatically guaranteed re-entry. You must file an appeal to the Committee on Course and Standing in the Office of Academic Standards (A-206). The appeal will be reviewed and you will be informed of the decision by mail. Please submit both of these forms to the Office of Academic Standards at least three months before the semester begins.
CCNY ID CARD
How do I get an ID card?Once you've been accepted and have paid your tuition bill, you may obtain a CCNY ID Card. It is the College's policy that all students, faculty and staff possess a valid CCNY issued ID card. The CCNY ID card is to be worn or displayed while on campus. All ID cards are issued in the ID office, NA 1/204.
How do I get my CCNY email address or change my email password?The College has a website for email information. On this website, you can be reminded of your email address and also change your password. It is important that you check your CCNY email regularly. Important relevant notices will be sent to your CCNY email account. You are responsible for information sent to you through your campus email account.
Are grades mailed to me at the end of each semester?No, you can check your transcript on-line for grades via CUNYfirst.
How do I calculate my GPA?Each grade received is assigned a numerical value called "Quality Points." The number of quality points multiplied by the number of credits the course carries is the total for the course. The GPA is found by adding these totals and dividing this amount by the number of credits attempted. For quality point values and more information about grades, please refer to the CUNY Uniform Grade Symbols Glossary and Guidelines.
What is the Pass/Fail option?The Pass/Fail option allows students to take elective courses for credit with less emphasis on performance. Students need only earn any passing grade to receive a "P" instead of a traditional weighted letter grade. Students unable to earn a passing grade will receive an "F".
How do I order a transcript?You can order a transcript by completing the Transcript Request Form available at the Office of the Registrar, A102 or via the Registrar's website.
How long does it take to receive a transcript after I have ordered it?It takes about 7-10 business days if you order by mail.
How much does a transcript cost?All transcripts are $7 each. There is no charge for transcripts sent to another CUNY institution.
Can I get a letter verifying my enrollment?Yes, you may request a letter of enrollment by completing a Request for Certification letter form and submitting the form either in person at the Office of the Registrar, A-102 or via fax to (212) 650-6108.
Can I get a letter verifying my graduation?Yes, you may request a letter of graduation by completing a Request for Certification letter form and submitting the form either in person at the Office of the Registrar, A-102 or via fax to (212) 650-6108.
Can I get a letter stating current enrollment for insurance?Yes, you may request a letter stating current enrollment by completing a Request for Certification letter form and submitting the form either in person at the Office of the Registrar, A-102 or via fax to (212) 650-6108. The insurance company may also give you a form for us to complete—just bring it to A-102 and we'll help you with the rest.
I think I should be on the Dean's List. How do I find out?Students are placed on the Dean's List for a particular year if for that year they:
- Are a full time undergraduate first degree student.
- Have a 3.2 grade point average
- Have completed at least 24 credits at City College
- Have no grades other than A, B, C, D, W or P.
Do I have to apply to graduate?Yes, you must apply about three months prior to the date you expect to graduate. Dates are published in the academic calendar.
My plans have changed and I need to defer my graduation to the following semester. Can I do that?You can defer your application for graduation on-line or complete a "Cancel Graduation Form." This form is available in the Office of the Registrar, A-102.
How do I know if I graduated?After you have applied for graduation, check with your academic advisor to make sure you are on track towards completing your degree requirements. You will receive an email from the Office of the Registrar via your CCNY email address confirming you have officially graduated and diploma availability.

What is Commencement? When is it?Commencement is the celebration each spring acknowledging students' academic achievements. It is the Friday following Memorial day Monday. Students expecting to graduate in spring as well as all students who graduated the previous summer or fall are invited. Note that Commencement is not the same thing as graduation: your degree will be conferred after college officials verify that all your degree requirements have been met, regardless of whether or not you attend the Commencement ceremony.
How do I attend the graduation ceremony (Commencement)?Graduates of February and September are automatically invited to our graduation ceremony. May/June applicants for graduation are invited as well. You will receive this information through your CCNY e-mail account. The invitations are usually sent in March. If you change your e-mail address please notify the Commencement office. firstname.lastname@example.org
What if I want to change the way my name appears on my diploma?When applying for graduation, the way your name appears in CUNYfirst will be the name on your diploma. If there is a discrepancy between the name you wish to appear on your diploma and the name we have you must contact the Office of the Registrar and complete an Application for Change of Name form.
GRADUATION HONORS (LATIN DISTINCTIONS)
How do I know if I am graduating with honors?When you graduate with your baccalaureate degree, there are three categories: ″ Summa cum laude - is granted to students whose GPA is at least 3.8 ″ Magna cum laude - is granted to students whose GPA is at least 3.5 ″ Cum laude - is granted to students whose GPA is at least 3.2 This distinction will appear on your transcript and diploma. Second-degree undergraduates are not eligible for honors.
I am a transfer student to City College. How is my eligibility for Latin honors determined?You must have a minimum of 60 local credits taken at CCNY and your cumulative GPA must be at least 3.2 to be considered for Latin Honors.
