Position Description and Duties

The Assistant Vice President of Development (AVP) is a member of the Development & Institutional Advancement senior management team and reports to the Vice President for Development & Institutional Advancement.In this capacity, the AVP ensures that each member school/unit establishes and achieves goals that meet its overall objectives and larger outcomes outlined by the governing strategic vision for the City College of New York.

The AVP plays a key role in campaign planning and direction, with primary focus on cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts of $100,000 or more. The AVP maintains a select portfolio of 100-150 major and principal gift prospects and is responsible for generating $5 million annually in new gifts and pledges. Additionally, the AVP supports the Vice President (VP) in her principal gift activities, works with the Board of the City College 21st Century Foundation, and interacts with the College President.The AVP may also oversee central major gift events including but not limited to those sponsored by the Office of Development.


The duties and assignments include, but are not limited to, working closely with the president, deans, faculty members, administrators and all College units in articulating and implementing plans, goals and activities related to development efforts. In addition, the AVP may supervise administrative positions in the Office of the Vice President and substitute for the VP when needed.Over the course of the year, the AVP is responsible for monitoring expenditures and continually revising forecasts for year-and campaign-end progress.
 
The AVP will provide guidance, mentorship and oversight to development professionals. In that capacity, the AVP is responsible for helping them establish and achieve aggressive financial and visit goals annually.Working with the Executive Director, the Director, and the Associate Director of Development, the AVP is the key administrator for weekly Prospect Strategy Meetings involving all of CCNY’s major gifts staff.

 

Responsibilities

The AVP will:

  • Participate as a full member of the senior development team contributing to overall unit planning and providing fund-raising counsel to senior leadership within the schools/units;
  • Help build a greater awareness of the importance of private philanthropy among campus constituencies and external partners;
  • Assist the Vice President in building a foundation for substantive and enduring growth in private support for the schools/units;
  • Work with the Vice President and academic/unit leadership, assisting in establishing aggressive, but reasonable fund-raising goals and strategies for achieving and making progress towards those goals;    
  • Continue to forge close relationships with the CCNY Alumni Association and the City College Fund;
  • Work with the Vice President to ensure a systematic and coordinated approach to identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors; conduct regular prospect portfolio reviews with direct reports; and work to secure support from foundations and corporations; 
  • Work with the Office of Communications to determine collateral materials (web, print and e-based) to advance a program of private philanthropy in all areas, particularly the Chancellor’s Decade of Science; and

Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Vice President for Development.



Qualifications and Requirements

A bachelor’s degree and ten years of progressively responsible development experience required.  A minimum of three years experience in higher education, preferably at an institution with a donor or alumni base exceeding 25,000.  Recognized high-level expertise and individual accomplishment in major gifts fundraising, with substantial demonstrated success in closing gifts of $100,000 or more.  Demonstrated experience building successful, productive relationships with top university administrators, deans, and trustees.

 

Demonstrated experience in:

·         Staffing high-end advisory boards and committees;

·         Writing fundraising proposals;

·         Supervising professional staff;

·         Obtaining grants from corporations and private foundations; and

·         Researching, interpreting and analyzing data.

 

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, expertise in Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising database and in MS Office Suite.  Maturity, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.
