POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 


The Gateway Advising Center of The City College of New York invites applications for a full-time academic advisor position.

The Gateway Advising Center advises approximately 3,000 students, a cohort comprised of Freshmen, Continuing and Transfer students who have not yet decided on a major or who are fulfilling eligibility requirements for entry into specialized programs. Its mission is to nurture academic success for undeclared students with particular attention to the programmatic needs of first-year and at-risk students. The Center also coordinates the summer academic skills workshops, which prepares students to meet eligibility requirements in Mathematics, Science, Reading and Writing.

Although the primary responsibility of this position is the delivery of advisement services to Gateway students, the Academic Advisor/Program Coordinator also collaborates in the planning and delivery of other Gateway events and services, including the summer and academic year skills workshops.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:


• Providing academic advisement to students who have not yet declared a major, through one-on-one mentoring, workshops, or presentations.
• Advising students about academic standards, policies and programs available to facilitate their success.
• Assisting the Coordinator of Advising and Director in developing and implementing retention strategies for at-risk students.
• Maintaining and tracking general and confidential student records.
• Attending meetings and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

 

 


A Bachelor’s degree is required. A minimum of two years experience in a higher education setting or related field preferred. Experience with student advisement and teaching at the college level a plus. Excellent oral and written skills. Familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of software such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Knowledge of Access a plus. The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to higher education, offering advisement that not only focuses on students’ professional goals, but stimulates their intellectual and academic development as well.
