CASAC Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program
Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED
This certificate program provides the 350 total hours of instruction required by New York State and is designed to be completed in 3 semesters. The program has been approved by OASAS (the Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services).
Our CASAC certificate program is for people who want to become alcohol and drug-prevention specialists or substance abuse counselors in schools, treatment facilities, or social service agencies. Classes are divided into four sections:
- 85 hours related to learning about alcoholism and substance abuse
- 150 hours related to alcoholism and substance abuse counseling
- 70 hours related to assessment, clinical evaluations, treatment planning, case management, educating the client's family about alcoholism and/or substance abuse, and community education/awareness
- 45 hours related to the professional and ethical responsibilities of a counselor
Upon completion of the program, students will have met the NYS requirements for taking the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor examination.

Assessing & Treating the Dually Diagnosed
This course is essential for understanding and treating people who suffer from both mental illness and alcoholism. The importance of concurrent rather than sequential treatment of these disorders cannot be overemphasized. Professional counselors must be prepared to recognize and respond to the unique spectrum of needs of this fast-growing populations of clients.

Relapse Prevention & Special Client Populations
This course will begin with a discussion of the nature of addiction and will then review both internal and external factors that may cause a relapse. Four models of relapse prevention in a treatment setting will be examined.

Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part II (Group)
This course will review the necessary components of all therapeutic groups with emphasis on group cohesion, "here and now" orientation, and process illumination. The role and mindset of the facilitator will be discussed.

This course will focus on the theories of the three pioneers in the field of family counseling for the chemically dependent: Satir, Bowens and Minuchin. The goal of the course is to develop a unified approach to family counseling.

Physical Aspects of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism
This course examines the physical effects of alcohol and drugs on the human body. Students will learn how the human body processes drugs and alcohol beginning with the administration of the drug and ingestion of alcohol to their elimination.
