Medical Administrative Assistant
Certificate Program

The CPS Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate Program at City College prepares students for an entry level position as a Medical Administrative Assistant in a doctor's office, hospital, health insurance company, or a  medical billing company. Students will learn the basic skills needed to be a claims processor or a medical biller and coder, and acquire a comprehensive knowledge of key areas such as health insurance, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.

Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED; basic computer and keyboarding skills.

Overview of the Health Care System
This is a general review of the health care system as it relates to working in a medical environment.  You will learn to identify different types of medical institutions and medical offices.  You will be taught the  personal/ professional, medical/ legal, and bio-ethical standards required of a Medical Administrative Assistant, as well as learning about the importance of safe-guarding patient confidentiality.  All of this is to help you comprehend and meet HIPPO requirements. In addition, you will develop an un­derstanding of the term HMO and learn how to interpret the information given on a patient's insurance card.

Bookkeeping and Basic ICD-9 and CPT-4 Coding
This course teaches students concepts of bookkeeping systems, financial terms, transaction recording and banking. An overview of medical coding using ICD-9 and CPT-4, billing, and reimbursement rules are also covered in this course.

Communication and Customer Service Here you will become familiar with various forms of written correspondence used in a medical office. At the conclusion of the course you will create a block-style letter in the correct format. You will also learn to improve your oral communicat­ion skills so that you can effectively serve your clients/patients.

Medical Office Procedures and Medical Records
This course will provide you with an understanding of the basic terms of medical lan­guage. You will learn to identify the meaning of new word elements and use these elements to comprehend medical terms. You will also learn to define terms that refer to different structures of the hu­man body.

CMAA Test Preparation
On completion of the certificate program, students will be prepared to sit in for Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) Certification exam.  This certification review course is designed to aid students in their preparation for the CMAA exam.  The Adult and Continuing Education program is an an approved testing site with the National Health Career Association.
