The SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab

Overview

Housed in a new state of the art facility within the  historic Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem, the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA) at The City College of New York is now seeking applicants for its newly created pre-college and college level Architecture Summer Career Lab.  Uniquely positioned as the only public school of architecture in New York City, the SSA is offering a Summer Career Lab to give  those considering a career in architectural design a chance to explore the theory and practice of architecture in lectures, workshops, and design studies taught by our award-winning and internationally recognized faculty.  Through an emphasis on hand craft and digital fabrication, interdisciplinary research, and ecologically and culturally sustainable practices, at the Architecture Summer Career Lab you will learn the many ways you can engage with the practice of architecture, while exploring its new theories, materials, and technologies.  The five-week SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab provides students with both the practical experience and theoretical foundation required to make an informed and meaningful career choice.

Studio Culture and Facilities
Beginning with exploratory hand-sketches and advancing through measured, hard-line digital drawings and three-dimensional models, you will be taught how to take an architectural project through various stages of design and development.  Each student will have access to his or her own workspace in one of the light-filled Spitzer School studios, while working in a group of between 12 to 15 students, all the while receiving individual attention from design instructors who will provide direction and encouragement on a daily basis.  Instruction includes personal, one-on-one meetings, small group sessions, and the chance to have your work reviewed by distinguished design professionals who offer constructive criticism and feedback.  Drawing, model-making, software and portfolio workshops provide you with the many necessary manual and digital skills to successfully develop your project.  You will also have the chance to attend lectures given by distinguished design professionals who are experts in the latest developments and trends in the profession.  Students in the Summer Career Lab will be able to utilize our library, digital design and fabrication labs, and model-shop to develop projects, and have access to our digital cameras and computer labs to document the development of projects for their portfolios.  During this five week course, students will learn the skills required to succeed in a professional program in architecture and gain knowledge of the many aspects of contemporary architectural practice.

Eligibility: Submission of examples of graphic, photographic, or other design work is encouraged but not required.  When the application is complete, the Office of Admissions will notify the applicant of the admission decision.  Admission is on a rolling basis.  To learn more about the CCNY Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture please visit: www.ccny.cuny.edu/ssa
