Admission requirements for the program leading to teacher certification in adolescent (secondary) mathematics are:

• Declare a mathematics major and indicate that you are interested in the education track.
• Complete a minimum of 12 credits of the mathematics major with a gpa of 2.5 or better.
• Have an overall gpa of 2.5 or better.
• Declare your intention to major in secondary mathematics education in the Education Department Student Services Office, NAC 6/204.
• Pass the New York State Teacher's Examination : Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST) or the City College School of Education's S.E.A.T.
• Make an appointment with the Mathematics Education undergraduate advisor.
• Take the New York State Content Specialty Test in mathematics and submit the scores to the Mathematics Education Advisor.
  

To maintain ones status as a secondary mathematics teacher candidate and be recommended for student teaching a candidate must:

• Maintain a 2.5 gpa in the mathematics major.
• Maintain an overall 2.5 gpa.
• Pass the New York State Liberal Arts and Science Test and the New York State Content Specialty Test in Mathematics.
• Complete the following educational core:

EDUC 20500: Adolescent learning and development (4 credits)
EDUC 31100: Special Issues for Secondary School Teachers: Special Education, Second Language Acquisition and Literacy (4 credits)
EDUC 44300: Methods of Teaching Mathematics in the Secondary Schools (3 credits)
EDUC 45103: Development of the Secondary School: Philosophy, Urban Issues and Curriculum Development in Secondary School Mathematics(3 credits)

and successfully present the teaching portfolio.

Note: The educational core includes 100 hours of pre-student teaching experience in the New York City Schools. Teacher candidates must have time during normal public school hours to fulfill this requirement.

Admission to Student Teaching requires completion of the student teaching application during the first 10-weeks of the semester prior to student teaching. Contact the Office of Field Experiences and Student Teaching NAC 6/205 for information regarding the deadlines and application process. Admissions requirements include:

• Completion of all Liberal Arts, mathematics major, and education requirements
• A gpa of 2.50 or higher.
• Successful completion of 100 hours of field experience (part of education requirements).
• A gpa of 2.5 in the mathematics major.
• A passing score on the School of Education's S.E.A.T or New York State Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST).
• A passing score on the New York State Content Specialty Test in Mathematics (CST).

During the student teaching semester you will register for:

EDUC 46500: Student Teaching (6 credits) - This is full-time, full-semester, supervised teaching experience in the New York City Public Schools.*

EDUC 41900: Child Abuse and Health Education Seminar (0 credits)

 

To be recommended for certification teacher candidates must:

• Complete the bachelor's degree with a major in mathematics and apply for graduation.
• Successfully complete the student teaching semester.
• Pass the New York State LAST, CST and ATS-W exams.
• Submit an application for certification to the City College Certification Officer.
