Students today are bombarded with a wide variety of media and technology. As a result, they already interact with them in a very sophisticated way. This workshop will provide teachers with the confidence to navigate media and technology in the classroom in a way that encourages active listening skills, critical thinking skills and verbal and creative expression from their students of all learning styles.
In this workshop, we will take age-specific film and/or television programming, and unpack how to use it to enrich curriculum. Participants will gain an understanding of basic Media Literacy principles, how to encourage active viewing and listening, how to deconstruct and analyze media with students, specific curriculum extension activities, as well as theatre activities that will deepen students understanding of what they are studying and allow them to creatively express themselves. Finally, we will explore how both teachers and students can use the Internet in a meaningful way to support learning. All analysis and activities will be aligned to State and National Standards, as well as the newly released Blueprint for the Moving Image.
This workshop will be lead by Nicole Kempskie, an adjunct lecturer in the Educational Theatre department at CCNY, and the Education Manager at the Paley Center for Media in New York City, where she leads Media workshops for students K-College and trains teachers from all over the greater New York area on how to integrate media into the classroom. She is one of the writers of the Department of Education's Blueprint for the Moving Image and part of the Blueprint's
Professional Development team.
