Save the Date: Alumni to Honor Renowned Transportation Expert at May 27 Dinner

Dr. Joseph SussmanOn Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at their annual dinner in Manhattan, CCNY Engineering School Alumni will honor Dr. Joseph Sussman BCE '61. Dr. Sussman, the JR East Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at MIT, will receive the group’s Career Achievement Award. The event will be held at the National Arts Club. Tickets are $75 and may be purchased from Joshua Phillippe, CCNY Alumni Association Program Coordinator, at 212-650-5343.

Dr. Sussman was recently elected Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. His book, Introduction to Transportation Systems, is the recognized text in transportation engineering programs throughout the United States and abroad. He earned his PhD from MIT in 1967 and since then has served on the MIT faculty.

Dr. Sussman specializes in planning, investment analysis, operations, management, design and maintenance of large-scale transportation systems, working in many modal environments. His research in rail service reliability, rail operations, freight car maintenance and track maintenance, high speed rail and rail risk assessment in the U.S. and Japan has had a major impact on the railroad industry. He has worked on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), helping to build the U.S. national program, as well as on the development of an "intelligent corridor" in Bangkok, and on a strategic plan for ITS/Commercial Vehicle deployment in Maryland.

At MIT, Dr. Sussman’s posts have included Associate Dean of Engineering for Educational Programs, Civil Engineering Department Head, Director of the Center for Transportation Studies, Director of the Association of American Railroads Affiliated Laboratory at MIT, and chairman of important Transportation Research Board committees. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Transportation Research Forum, Transportation Research Board Executive Committee, and the ITSystems America Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is widely published and has lectured and consulted extensively. He is founder of Multisystems of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
