Start: 10/15/08
End: 10/31/10

Morton DennMorton M. Denn, the Albert Einstein Professor of Science and Engineering and Director of the Benjamin Levich Institute for Physico-Chemical Hydrodynamics at the City College of New York, has been selected to receive the 2008 Founders Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Chemical Engineering by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Denn is a CUNY Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering with a joint appointment as Professor of Physics. Prior to joining CCNY in 1999 he was Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley for eighteen years, where he served as Department Chair and as Head of Materials Chemistry in the Materials Sciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He began his academic career at the University of Delaware, where he was the Allan P. Colburn Professor of Chemical Engineering. He has held visiting chairs at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Melbourne, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Denn’s sixth book, Polymer Melt Processing: Foundations in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, was published in August, 2008 by the Cambridge University Press. His five other books, one edited volume, and more than 200 other publications encompass a variety of topics in engineering science, including optimal system design and control, synthetic fuel technology, and the mechanics of complex fluids such as polymers, colloids, and liquid crystals. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denn received an honorary D.Sc. from the University of Minnesota in 2001, and he is the recipient for numerous awards for research, education, and professional service, including a Guggenheim Fellowship; a Fulbright Lectureship; the Professional Progress, William H. Walker, Warren K. Lewis, and Institute Lectureship Awards from the AIChE; the Chemical Engineering Lectureship Award from the American Society for Engineering Education; and the Bingham Medal and Distinguished Service Awards from the Society of Rheology. Denn was the Editor of the AIChE Journal, the flagship journal of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, from 1985 to 1991, and he was the Editor of the Journal of Rheology, the most highly cited research journal for the mechanics of non-solid materials, from 1995 to 2005.
