New York State Grant Boosts Stem Cell Research at the Grove School
Start: 03/20/08
End: 03/31/10

Sihong WangBiomedical Engineering is one of the fastest growing areas at the Grove School. It recently received an added boost in the form of a grant from New York State’s new $600 million multi-year stem cell research program. City College is one of 25 institutions to benefit from the first awards under the program and will receive $198,000 in funding over one year.

“While CCNY faculty members now can conduct biomedical research related to stem cells, these funds will help us develop long-term research capabilities using human embryonic stem cells,” said Dr. John Tarbell, Wallace Coulter Distinguished Professor and Chair of Biomedical Engineering at The Grove School.

The proceeds of the grant will be used for two purposes. It will support comprehensive stem cell training for faculty members who are actively working or planning to work in stem cell research. In addition, it will fund acquisition of a fluorescence-activated cell sorter, an essential piece of equipment for stem cell characterization and isolation with high purity. Dr. Tarbell also noted that two new science research buildings, slated for construction on the CCNY campus, will provide extended space and facilities for development of stem cell research at the College.

In addition to being one of the Grove School’s most dynamic research thrusts, Biomedical Engineering is one of the most interdisciplinary, drawing on faculty across City College and CUNY. Dr. Tarbell and Dr. Sihong Wang, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, are co-Principal Investigators on the grant. The award also supports Dr. Bingmei Fu, Associate Professor Biomedical Engineering; Dr. Lane Gilchrist, Assistant Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering; Professor of Biology, Dr. Shubha Govind; and Dr. Ira Josephson, Associate Medical Professor at The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education.
