Mission of the Civil Engineering Department
The mission of the Department of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York, inspired by a tradition of Access and Excellence, is to educate and prepare students to be leaders in the civil engineering profession as practicing engineers, researchers, or educators. The department will continue its tradition of educating students of diverse backgrounds, including traditionally underrepresented minorities and women. The department also commits itself to maintaining a diverse faculty of scholastic excellence and dedication to the highest quality education.
Mission of the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program
The mission of the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program at the City College of New York, inspired by a tradition of Access and Excellence, is to educate and prepare undergraduate students to become practicing engineers and engineering managers who are leaders in the civil engineering profession, and to provide students with the tools and encouragement to consider careers as researchers or educators. The Department will continue its tradition of educating students of diverse backgrounds, including traditionally underrepresented minorities and women. The Department also commits itself to maintaining a diverse faculty of scholastic excellence and dedication to the highest quality education.
Program Educational Objectives
The program educational objectives are the goals of the CivilEngineering Department that relate to the undergraduate educationalmission. They are that an alumnus of the Civil Engineering Programshall be:
- Successfully growing in their chosen career
- Working effectively as a member of a professional team or as itsleader/manager
- Seeking lifelong learning through professional development orgraduate education, and
- Successfully working toward a professional license asappropriate to their chosen career. .
Additional Goals of the Civil Engineering Department
In addition to the Program Educational Objectives, the Civil Engineering Department has the following additional goals consistent with their broader mission and the mission of City College:
- To develop instructional and research collaborations with stakeholders such as local or federal agencies and firms.
- To conduct research of value in areas of local, national, and global importance.
- To serve the community and the civil engineering profession.
- To improve access to quality education for an increasingly diverse student body.
- To enhance the status of the civil engineering department as a leader in civil engineering.
Program Outcomes
In order to ensure that graduates of the Civil Engineering program achieve the program educational objectives listed above, the program aims to instill the following program outcomes during the years of study leading to the bachelor's degree:
- an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
- an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, constructability, and sustainability
- an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- an ability to communicate effectively
- the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- a knowledge of contemporary issues, and
- an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
