Grove School students, among the most talented and skilled young engineers in the country, get an excellent classroom education. But they also need internships, which provide practical application of textbook learning and greatly improve their chances for success in their career. Competing for a first job demands the kinds of internships regularly available at the “big name” institutions. By the time our student ends an internship, he or she is often offered an excellent full-time engineering job - sometimes even before graduation. To build on this momentum, the Grove School of Engineering needs alumni and alumna to identify, advocate for and participate in designing internship opportunities for our undergraduates.
Typical successful internships involve working directly with engineering teams on projects that have significant impact on the business, and involve:
· Research opportunities concerning new product introduction, materials applications and cost effectiveness,
· Mentorship with company staff members to foster continued professional growth and individual development, and
· Networking opportunities with company executives.
The Grove School seeks internships in every engineering major it offers - Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer. Electrical, Environmental and Mechanical.
Creating hands-on opportunities is a uniquely effective way for alumni and alumna to “give back” to the school for the superb engineering education they received. This collaboration deepens the collegiate experience not just for students but for faculty and staff, and at the same time strengthens the New York engineering community. If you know of internship opportunities for Grove School of Engineering students, please contact Dr. Ruth Sinton, Director of Student Development, Grove School of Engineering, at212-650-7273, or e-mail her at rsinton@ccny.cuny.edu.
