CCNY alumnus John Vig has been selected as president-elect of IEEE, and will lead the organization in 2009. Dr. Vig came to the United States in 1957 from his native Hungary. By 1969, he held a BS from CCNY and a PhD from Rutgers, both in Physics. “Without CCNY, I probably would not have a college education today, and, I definitely would not have been elected to high positions in the IEEE,” he said.
Dr. Vig has spent his career as an electronics engineer, and for 36 years worked in government laboratories, leading R&D programs at the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center, in Fort Monmouth, N.J. There he helped develop quartz crystal resonators for electronics applications including atomic clocks and sensors. He is currently working as a consultant with System Planning Corporation and as a technical adviser to SiTime Corp., a venture capital funded start-up. Additionally, since 1997, Dr. Vig has served as a technical advisor to program managers at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for programs ranging from micro- and nanoresonators to chip-scale atomic clocks. The holder of 55 patents, he has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications, including nine book chapters.
IEEE is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology, with more than 370,000 members in 160 countries. For Dr. Vig, an IEEE Fellow, the presidency is the culmination of over 30 years of volunteerism in the organization. Among his many leadership posts, in2000-2001 , he served as Founding President of the IEEE Sensors Council, which led to creation of the IEEE Sensors Journal and a conference, IEEE SENSORS, which attracts 600 participants annually. Prior to the formation of the IEEE Sensors Council, Dr. Vig served as president of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society. In addition he has been an IEEE national Director and Vice President for Technical Activities.
