The CUNY Energy Institute is a partner in the U.S. Department of Energy’s first energy innovation hub funded at $122 million over five years. The Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL) to be headquartered at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been selected by the DOE, and its members include Idaho, Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, the Electric Power Research Institute, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Westinghouse Electric Company as well as several universities. The CUNY team includes Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Energy Institute, and Professors Masahiro Kawaji and Taehun Lee of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the City College of New York. The consortium will develop advanced computer models that simulate nuclear power plant operations, use them to reduce capital and operating costs, extend the lifetime of the existing U.S. reactor fleet, and reduce nuclear waste volume. The CASL virtual reactor will also be used to accelerate the deployment of next-generation reactor designs, particularly advanced nuclear fuel technologies and structural materials within the reactor core. The new technologies will help strengthen the American nuclear industry. for more information on CASL.
