City College: D. Lemons, S. Weinbaum
External Collaborators: L. Xu, Purdue; L. Zhu, Univ. Maryland

Our research team is internationally recognized as a leader in microvascular heat transfer. The team with Professor L. Jiji developed the first models for countercurrent heat exchange in the microcirculation (vessels < 200 µm) and developed what is now widely referred to as the Weinbaum-Jiji bioheat equation. The team made the first measurements of the temperature profiles in the vicinity of thermally significant microvessels and more recently the axial thermal equilibration that occurs between small artery-vein pairs. The team is currently developing a new theory and experiments to explore thermal equilibration in vessels between 200 and 1000 µm where there is no satisfactory treatment. This research has been supported by either NIH, NSF or Whitaker grants since 1985.
