Undergraduate Advisement
As an engineering student, you are REQUIRED to participate in at least one academic advising session each semester. Be sure to check your CCNY e-mail on a regular basis for important messages.

What is advising?
You need academic advising assistance to ensure that your academic and career goals are met. The overall goal of the academic advising process is to help you develop meaningful educational plans that are consistent with your academic, personal and professional goals.
 
Who is my advisor?

Engineering and computer science majors with 0–44 credits:  You receive academic advising from professional staff through the Office of Student Development (OSD, Steinman 2M-7, 212 650-8040).  You will be scheduled for an academic advising session at least once per semester with a staff member from the OSD.

Engineering and computer science majors with 45 or more credits:  You receive academic advising from your program's advisor (professional staff) and from a faculty member in the department(s) of the major.  An academic advising session must be scheduled at least once per semester with a faculty advisor.  Additional advising is handled by professional staff in the Office of Undergraduate Affairs (OUA)—contact Ms. Jasmine Gonzalez in Steinman Hall room 209, 212 650-8020.

 

What should I do if I participate in other campus programs that offer advising?
You may participate in one or more campus-wide programs that offer students advising assistance. You are encouraged to make use of all the secondary advisors that are available to you.  But the School of Engineering has the primary responsibility for advising its students.

What happens if I don’t participate in an advising session with an engineering advisor?
Each semester, an EA (Engineering Advising) “stop” will be placed on your record that blocks your registration.  After you have completed your REQUIRED once per semester advising session, the EA stop will be removed.

When will the REQUIRED academic advising sessions occur?
The REQUIRED advising sessions will occur at least two weeks before early (web) registration.  Check your CCNY e-mail, and your department or program website and signage, for more information.

What if I or my advisor misses the appointment?
If you miss your appointment time without a valid excuse, unfortunately, you might not get advised until after all other student appointments.  If your faculty or staff advisor misses an appointment, another faculty or staff member will assist you.

How do I get the most out my advising session(s)?
You should:

• Take the time to think about your academic and career goals
• Prepare questions before your advising session
• Initiate contact with a faculty or staff advisor for the REQUIRED once per semester advising session, and other sessions throughout the academic year
• Make appointments for advising sessions during posted office hours. Notify the advisor or someone in the advisor’s office if it is impossible to keep appointments
• Ask questions.  If you do not understand, ask, ask, ask!!
• Familiarize yourself with College’s Academic Calendar (click here) to understand important deadlines, (i.e., drop/add deadlines)
• Schedule courses that meet your degree requirements and educational and career interests
• Accept responsibility for making final decisions related to your coursework
• Do the proper follow-up after an advising session

What should I expect  from my advisor?
Your academic advisor should:

• Provide accurate and current information about School of Engineering and College rules, regulations, policies, requirements, etc.  For detailed complete information on School of Engineering Policies/Procedures, click here.  
• Assist students with creating an appropriate course schedule
• Provide students with current career information and career opportunities within major and specialization areas
• Encourage students to utilize School of Engineering and College-wide support services and initiate contact with these offices, if necessary. For more information on support services, click here.
• Monitor students’ academic performance and recommend appropriate interventions, as necessary.

Be ADVISED!  Academic advising is the most important contributor to a student’s successful academic experience.
