About Lynn Appelbaum, APR, Fellow PRSA
Lynn Appelbaum has been a public relations professional for more than 25 years, working in both the public and private sectors in media relations, strategic planning and communications. In 2006, she was elected to PRSA’s College of Fellows for her leadership, service and contributions to the profession.

Appelbaum joined The City College of New York faculty in 1993, where she serves as Director of the Advertising and Public Relations Specialization in the Department of Media & Communication Arts.  She organized the College’s first chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America in 1996 and continues to serve as its faculty advisor.  Under her leadership, the Ad/PR program has grown to 400 majors, tripling its annual graduates over the past five years. She is a major proponent of fostering diversity within the public relations profession.  In 2003 she helped create scholarship opportunities for talented CCNY PR students awarded annually through the Foundation of Women Executives in Public Relations (WEPR).  In 2008, she received The City College Alumni Association’s Faculty Service Award, following her leadership role in the College’s 10-year Reaccreditation by the Middle State Commission on Higher Education.

In 2005, Appelbaum co-authored a major study on diversity within the PR profession with Dr. Rochelle Ford of Howard University (www.ccny.cuny.edu/pr survey).  She has written about mentoring and crisis communications for PRSA’s Strategist and Tactics, is co-author of a textbook chapter on global corporate reputation, and has been a guest on NPR about PR ethical issues involving VNR’s.

Prior to coming to City College, Appelbaum was Press Manager for NBC News “Today” show, Director of Public Affairs for The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Marketing Director of Merkin Concert Hall and the Lucy Moses Arts Center in Manhattan.   She has consulted for MSNBC, The New York Public Library, the New York Road Runner’s Club and Hudson Guild Settlement House, among others.

Appelbaum is a PRSA-NY board member and serves as the diversity chair of the chapter, which was honored for its student diversity outreach program in 2007 by PRSA. She was awarded PRSA-NY’s Dorf Mentoring Award in 1999, one of the highest awards bestowed by the chapter. She holds a BM from Ithaca College and MA in Arts Administration from Indiana University. Appelbaum lives in New Jersey with her husband Joseph Spivack and two daughters.
