Welcome to the New Concentration in Creative Writing in Spanish! *


This new concentration will start in the academic year 2008 -09 and it will be run as part of our existing M. A. program in Spanish.

The first course in our new Concentration in Creative Writing will be offered by Distinguished Lecturer Carmen Boullosa, and the course is linked to a three  (3) credit-workshops workshops  and talks Writing/Reading Mexico offered by three major Mexican writers from México.
 
Prof. Carmen Boullosa will teach the Creative Writing in Spanish course and will direct the workshop in fall, 2008. Her course (Spanish B7803  Seminar in Creative Writing ) will be offered on Mondays, 6:30 to 8:10. This course will work jointly with a series of workshops offered by the guest writers from México. These workshops will last 10 contact hours each, totaling 30 contact hours. For more information about the courses, please, visit our courses listing.

The guest writers from Mexico that will take part in the Writing/Reading Mexico course will hold their sessions the weeks of September 17, October 21, and November 18. They are:

Here is how the credits will be distributed:

Course Distribution: A total of 30 credits distributed as follows:

Required (One of the following courses: 3 credits)

History of the Spanish Language, or

Spanish Grammar and Syntax;

And Research Methods/Literary Theory (3 credits).


Writing workshops (3 credits each [at least three]). Writing workshops will be taught by professional writers and faculty members of our Program.  The remainder courses will be from the Departmental graduate offerings. Students will be allowed to take a maximum of nine (9) graduate credits in other Departments or Divisions of the College, or in other CUNY units.


Thesis:

Degree candidates must submit a publishable full-length manuscript to be so judged by their mentor and at least one other member of the faculty. In connection with this requirement, a thesis tutorial course will be developed.

Foreign Language Qualifying Examination: as indicated in current catalogue.


Comprehensive Examination: as indicated in current catalogue.

Readings:

The creative writing course, will have the following required readings:

Juan José Arreola. Bestiario
Juan Rulfo. Pedro Páramo

Students will select two (2) additional readings related to their semester project.

For th Reading/Writing Mexico Workshop students will have to purchase:

Juan Villoro. Los culpables
Jorge Volpi. A pesar del oscuro silencio
Bárbara Jacobs. Las hojas muertas
Carmen Boullosa. Antes

These selections will be available at the CCNY Bookstore.
