After working in the Barbados as a print and broadcast journalist Maquita wanted to strengthen her academic background and to branch into Public Relations. She chose City College because the program offered the most intensive communications BA in CUNY. She was also attracted by the College's long history, its Harlem community, its affordability and diversity. The New York location with a large West Indian Diaspora was certainly a bonus she says.
Maquita feels the program in City offers a solid theoretical underpinning as well as the significant practical experience of the faculty. She says "The classes are conducted on a par with those in the corporate world, which instills a strong work etiquette and discipline that both challenges and inspires me to strive for success".
Another aspect she emphasizes is the impressive internship opportunities Professor Lynn Appelbaum makes available to students, where they gain valuable experience with top AD/PR agencies. Maquita feels that Lynn's personal nature, forthrightness and sage counsel are a core rewarding experience of the program.
In Spring 2007, Maquita was awarded the Israel Levine Scholarship (for Oustanding Academic Performance/Most Promising PR Student) by the Communications Alumni of the CCNY, a Certificate of Service by the Office of International Students & The Division of Student and Affairs for Outstanding Volunteer Service and in Fall 2007 she was awarded the prestigious Helen Ostrowski Schoalrship for an International Student (For academic excellence in PR).
Maquita hopes to pursue an MA in International Relations & Public Affairs at Columbia University or in International Policy at NYU and her ultimate ambition is to be among key personnel in communications at the United Nations - specifically UNICEF.
Apart from course work and volunteering, Maquita enjoys cooking, reading and keeping up to date on politics and sport (she is a former track athlete). Although she misses the warm white beaches of the Barbados she would not trade places because she enjoys the Advertising/PR Program so much.
