Electronic design student plans career at PIXAR or DreamWorks
Robert Ushiro

undefined

Robert Ushiro (AKA Bobby Starbuck) is from Granada Hills in Southern California and is a senior in the Electronic Design and Multimedia BFA at City College. He misses the west coast but loves the east coast energy which he feels helps push him forward with his goals. This is why he turned down Virginia Military Institute in favor of City College of New York.

Since childhood, Bobby displayed a great interest in drawing which later developed into a desire to be a cartoonist. Later however Bobby was drawn towards the motion graphics and the VFX industries that specialize in those applications. Bobby chose the BFA in Electronic Design and Multimedia at City College because the program utilizes a combination of art and electronic media.

Bobby appreciates the freedom that the BFA curriculum offers because it allows students to pursue their individual interests and he also feels that the numerous electives available ensures that students are free to supplement their own interests rather than being restricted by a tightly-drawn curriculum.  When asked to specify in more detail, Bobby explains how this freedom fosters an atmosphere within the BFA program of finding diverse creative solutions for any design/multimedia challenge because the input comes from a wide range of skill sets, talents, and interests. You can check out some of Bobby's skills on his website.

Bobby also likes City College's history as a radical institution, explains: "City College pursued an ideologically different mission on educating the least-represented people compared to the ignorantly stubborn attitudes of the Ivy Leagues.  City College is a case-in-point example of how those relegated to the working-class are no less deserving or no less intelligent than their more privileged counterparts.  The numbers prove it."  In the end City came out on top as an institution with many Noble Prize recipients, Rhodes Scholars and prestigious alumni. Bobby is proud to be attending the "Proletariat's Harvard".

After graduation, Bobby plans on working with motion graphics firms like Pixar or DreamWorks Animation. He is also considering visual FX firms in Montreal.  To accomplish these goals he plans on pursuing graduate school to study computer graphics in more detail. undefined
