Electronic design student plans career at PIXAR or DreamWorks
Robert Ushiro

undefined

Bobby Ushiro is from Southern California via Virginia and is a senior in the Electronic Design and Multimedia BFA program at City College.

He misses the west coast but loves the energy of the east coast which he feels helps push him forward towards his goal of becoming an animator. Robert was accepted into the 2005 class at Virginia Military Institute but chose to attend the City College of New York.

Since childhood, Bobby displayed a great interest in drawing which later developed into a desire to be a cartoonist. At the City College of New York, Bobby chose the BFA in Electronic Design and Multimedia at City College because the program utilizes a combination of traditional art and electronic media and offered a way for him to nurture his desire of becoming an animator.

Bobby appreciates the freedom that the BFA curriculum offers because it allows students to pursue their individual interests and he also feels that the numerous electives available ensures that students are free to supplement their own interests rather than being restricted by a tightly-drawn curriculum.

When asked to specify in more detail, Bobby explains that the EDM BFA program fosters an atmosphere of finding diverse creative solutions for any media challenge because the input comes from a wide range of skill and interests.

Bobby also admires City College's history as a radical institution, and explains: "City College pursued an ideologically different mission on educating the least-represented people compared to the ignorantly stubborn attitudes of the Ivy Leagues.  City College is a case-in-point example of how those relegated to the working-class are no less deserving or no less intelligent than their more privileged counterparts.  City College's long list of alumni Rhodes Scholars, Nobel Prize recipients, Emmy award winners, distinguished composers, writers, and scientists prove this."  Bobby is proud to be attending the "Proletariat's Harvard".

Working and attending school full-time while paying rent in New York is not easy for Bobby, but he embodies the grit, discipline and perseverance of a CCNY student.  Since there is no animation program within the Electronic Design and Multimedia program, Bobby supplements his education by studying from other animators like Richard Williams, John Kricfalusi, Preston Blair and Tex Avery.  The EDM program is flexible enough to allow Bobby to study CG and pursue his interest in animation.  After graduation, Bobby plans on pursuing a career as an animator working at the various creative studios scattered across NY and LA.  Bobby hopes one day to work with the best at Pixar studios.

To accomplish these goals he plans on devoting more time towards his personal work and also intends on pursuing graduate school to study computer graphics in more detail.  Keep an eye out for Bobby, his work is sure to be recognized.
