Welcome to the Department of Theatre and Speech

The City College of New York offers a unique and exciting BA Degree in Theatre.  Our Theatre Program offers a wide perspective in courses ranging from Acting, Directing, Theatre History, Playwriting, Technical Theatre and Design, Speech for the Stage, Musical Theatre Workshop, Acting for the Camera, Black Theatre, Women’s Theatre, Queer Theatre, Latin American Theatre, and many, many more.  Our Program also offers both a minor and a dual-major in Theatre for those ambitious students who choose to bridge two fields into a perspective career for themselves.

We believe in broadening the theatre education experience by encouraging multiple experiences in production work.  Through participation both onstage and backstage in our ambitious schedule of performances, students are able to test their skills against their highest ambitions, and then return to class work to further hone them.

Living in New York provides our students with the opportunity to study with our working faculty and invited guest artists. Our affiliate,   Harlem Repertory Theatre, offers chances to do professional-level shows during the summer months.  Being exposed to industry professionals at a culminating point in their education gives our students an edge in building the necessary connections as they go out into the world, so we bring casting directors and agents to the campus to meet advanced students.  For those who opt for a theatre teaching career, we offer a bridge into the CCNY Masters Program in Educational Theatre.  Come see why The City College of New York is the best kept secret in theatre training!
